"Happy Birthday to Me"A Never-Released Olivia Newton-John Song by Sabrina Plaisance-Sia
Updated: Oct 14
Happy Birthday to Me
Written by Olivia Newton-John, Steven McClintock & Victoria Shaw
Arranged by Dan Sia and Sabrina Plaisance-Sia
Performed by Sabrina Plaisance-Sia
A few years after Olivia's passing, singer-songwriter Steven McClintock reached out with a question that would change the trajectory of my career: Would I record a song he, Olivia, and Victoria Shaw wrote together in the late 1990s at Olivia's home in Malibu?
The song was written after another birthday, one more milestone marked while Olivia was navigating her cancer journey with courage and grace. It was meant for Olivia to release when she finished treatment, a celebration of being alive. Unfortunately for the world, she never recorded it.
To be entrusted with this song, to be the voice that finally brings it into the world, is one of the greatest honors of my career. This performance is my tribute to her spirit: hopeful, tender, and full of gratitude for the time we're given.
I truly wish we could have heard Olivia's voice singing this; it would have been perfection. I sing my version humbly, not trying to emulate Olivia, but simply from my heart.
Behind the Video
Filmed in the quiet of winter, the snow reflects the clarity that comes when you truly appreciate life's fragility. My daughter appears briefly in the video, a reminder that love continues, that new beginnings grow from what came before, and also because I wanted a mommy/daughter work day with my favorite little gal.
Arranged by my partner, Dan Sia (Josie Music Awards' 2026 Musician of the Year - Drums), this version draws from the warmth and energy of Olivia's '80s recordings while staying true to the song's intimate origins.
A Dedication
"Happy Birthday to Me" is dedicated to Olivia Newton-John, and to everyone who continues to fight, heal, and celebrate life, especially on the days when it feels hardest to do so.
